United Arab Emirates-based artificial intelligence firm G42 announced a partnership with U.S. chipmaker Nvidia to develop climate technology solutions. This collaboration comes just ahead of the UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s historic visit to the White House next week, marking the first visit by a UAE president.
In a statement, G42 highlighted that the two companies will work on enhancing global weather forecasting accuracy and will establish a climate tech lab and operational base in Abu Dhabi. The UAE is making significant investments in AI to diversify its economy beyond oil, and this partnership underscores its commitment to advanced technology.
Recent collaborations include Microsoft’s announcement of a $1.5 billion investment in G42 and plans to open two centers in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, Abu Dhabi-backed MGX is joining a $30 billion fund with BlackRock and Microsoft to invest in AI infrastructure.
However, U.S. officials have expressed concerns over the potential for advanced U.S. AI technology to reach China through Middle Eastern countries. In response, Washington imposed new export restrictions on AI chips last year.
During his visit, President bin Zayed will meet with President Joe Biden to discuss regional security and advancements in technology, with a focus on AI and economic cooperation. Anwar Gargash, the UAE’s diplomatic adviser, emphasized the strategic importance of the U.S.-UAE relationship despite discussions of tensions.
