Telecom giant BT has unveiled a multimillion-pound apprenticeship funding initiative aimed at assisting smaller companies, charities, and public sector organizations throughout England. The company has partnered with training provider Babington to transfer up to £4 million from its apprenticeship levy funds, which will help train new apprentices and upskill existing workforces.
BT estimates that this fund could support up to 550 apprentices, addressing the low uptake of apprenticeships among SMEs. Chris Sims, managing director for small and medium businesses (SMEs) at BT, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “SMEs make a significant contribution to our economy, but their uptake of apprenticeships is low. By sharing these funds, we’re giving businesses the financial support they need to invest in talent.”
This initiative not only aims to create a more skilled and diverse workforce but also provides SMEs with additional resources to grow and scale. BT’s apprenticeship program has been instrumental in shaping its workforce and setting industry standards.
Jen Bramley, chief executive of Babington, added, “Our expertise in apprenticeships will ensure that SMEs can navigate the process smoothly and connect with high-quality training providers. This collaboration has the potential to address skills gaps and support business growth across England.”
A key focus of the fund will be on developing digital skills, aligning with BT’s emphasis on technology and innovation. The program is open to SMEs, charities, and public sector organizations, including the NHS, targeting apprentices aged 22 and older.
This initiative aims to bolster local economic growth, reduce the digital divide, and enhance social mobility by providing swift access to apprenticeship funding. Over the past five years, BT has recruited more than 3,000 apprentices and graduates and announced plans to hire an additional 500 for its September intake.
