In a world increasingly vulnerable to technological manipulation, Binance’s former CEO, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, is sounding the alarm about a rising trend of AI-generated deepfakes promoting cryptocurrency scams. Recently released from jail, Zhao took to social media to urge the crypto community to remain vigilant against these deceptive tactics.
“There are deepfake videos of me circulating on various platforms. Please beware!” he cautioned on X, previously known as Twitter.
The phenomenon of deepfake impersonations is not new, with numerous high-profile figures falling victim, including former President Donald Trump, music mogul Taylor Swift, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Tesla’s Elon Musk. Now, with Vice President Kamala Harris showing interest in the crypto sector, speculations are swirling that she might soon be targeted by similar AI-generated scams.
According to blockchain forensic firm Elliptic, these scams often follow a predictable pattern: unsuspecting victims are lured with promises of significantly increased earnings in exchange for transferring cryptocurrency to a designated wallet. Unfortunately, the promised rewards rarely materialize, leaving victims with empty pockets.
Zhao himself has had a tumultuous month. After serving four months in a California prison for violations related to money laundering and the Bank Secrecy Act, he emerged to find Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, thriving in his absence. The company faced a staggering $4.3 billion penalty for its infractions, marking one of the largest fines ever levied on a corporate entity. Additionally, Zhao was hit with a $50 million fine from U.S. authorities and another $50 million from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Reflecting on his time away from the company, Zhao remarked, “Binance seems to be doing well without my intervention, which is great. This is every founder’s dream!”
As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, Zhao’s message serves as a crucial reminder for users to be wary of the potential dangers lurking in the digital space.
