CEO Atsushi Katsuki emphasizes that the declining working-age population in Japan poses an existential threat to domestic companies like Asahi. Since 1995, the Japanese beer market has contracted by 1-2% annually, leading Asahi to seek new growth opportunities abroad.

“Japan is a harbinger for the Western world, which is facing its own demographic challenges,” Katsuki notes. Meanwhile, Asahi is capitalizing on the robust European beer market, anticipating €4.7 billion in revenue and €584 million in profit from the region this year.

Strategic Acquisitions Fueling Growth

To break into Europe’s competitive beer sector, Asahi adopted a strategy of acquisitions rather than attempting to introduce Japanese innovations directly. The acquisition of Peroni and Dutch lager Grolsch from AB InBev in 2016, followed by the purchase of Fuller, Smith & Turner’s beer assets in 2019, solidified Asahi’s footprint in Europe.

Asahi Super Dry and Peroni share similar brand positioning, appealing to consumers looking for premium, stylish beer options. This strategic alignment has enabled Asahi to leverage Peroni’s established market presence to enhance its own brand.

Embracing Premiumization and Diverse Offerings

As the alcoholic drinks market increasingly shifts toward premiumization, Asahi has positioned itself well within this trend. By focusing on the high-end segment, the company aims to meet the evolving preferences of consumers across Europe. Asahi now holds significant market share in countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, and is a leading player in the UK’s super-premium beer category.

The Non-Alcoholic Trend

Another trend Asahi is closely monitoring is the growing demand for low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages. The company aims for 20% of its global sales to come from this segment by 2025, up from the current 7.7%. As consumer preferences shift, Asahi is expanding its portfolio to include flavored non-alcoholic options, catering to those who choose not to consume alcohol while still wanting to partake in drinking culture.

Despite its successes, Asahi faces ongoing challenges in Europe, particularly regarding supply chain disruptions caused by climate change. Katsuki has identified a shortage of barley and hops as a significant risk, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and environmental issues.

In addition, the rise of faux continental lagers, like Madrí in the UK, has stirred debate about authenticity in beer production. While these beers may lack true regional ties, Katsuki argues that their local production reduces carbon emissions compared to importing from abroad.

Future Plans: Expanding the Portfolio

Asahi is not resting on its laurels; there are plans for further expansion, including enhancing the global presence of its renowned whiskey brand, Nikka. Currently, only 10% of Nikka’s sales occur outside Japan, but increasing production capacity will allow Asahi to meet rising international demand.
