Apple Inc. (AAPL) is no longer in discussions to participate in OpenAI’s upcoming funding round, which aims to raise up to $6.5 billion. This withdrawal marks a last-minute end to what would have been a rare investment by the tech giant in another major Silicon Valley firm.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Apple fell out of negotiations just before the round’s anticipated closure this week. Meanwhile, other tech powerhouses like Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA) are still in talks to join the round. Microsoft is reportedly set to invest approximately $1 billion, building on its existing $13 billion stake in OpenAI.
The funding discussions remain fluid, and both the participants and the amounts invested could still shift. Thrive Capital is leading the round with an investment of around $1 billion, alongside potential contributions from Tiger Global Management and the United Arab Emirates state-backed MGX.
In addition to these funding efforts, OpenAI is undergoing a significant restructuring, transitioning from a nonprofit to a for-profit model. This shift has been encouraged by many of the new investors, but it introduces complexities for the startup. If the transition is not completed within two years, current investors will have the option to withdraw their funds.
