Alphabet, the parent company of Google, revealed plans to invest $3.3 billion in South Carolina to construct two new data centers, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. This significant investment aligns with the growing trend of tech companies enhancing their infrastructure to support artificial intelligence applications.
The new data center campuses will be located in Dorchester County and will also involve an expansion of Alphabet’s existing facilities in Berkeley County. The Dorchester County projects, situated in the Pine Hill Business Campus in Ridgeville and the Winding Woods Commerce Park in St. George, represent a $2 billion investment and are expected to create 200 operational jobs. Additionally, Alphabet plans to invest $1.3 billion in the expansion of its Berkeley County campus.
Earlier this year, Alphabet reported a capital expenditure of $13 billion for the June quarter, with expectations to maintain quarterly spending at or above $12 billion for the remainder of 2024. This investment comes amid a broader push in the tech sector; for instance, Microsoft recently announced a partnership with BlackRock and MGX to launch a $30 billion fund aimed at developing AI infrastructure, including data centers and energy projects.
