Qualcomm has recently approached Intel to discuss a potential acquisition, a move that could significantly reshape the semiconductor industry. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon is actively involved in exploring this transformative deal, although it faces several obstacles.
Reports indicate that Qualcomm is particularly interested in Intel’s design business, especially its PC design unit, and is evaluating the entire portfolio of Intel’s operations. However, the discussions are still in their early stages, and Qualcomm has not yet made a formal offer.
Intel’s shares saw a 3.3% increase following news of the discussions, while Qualcomm’s stock dropped by 2.9%. Intel, once the leading chipmaker globally, has seen its shares plummet nearly 60% this year, indicating a period of vulnerability for the company.
Any potential deal would likely attract scrutiny from antitrust regulators across the U.S., China, and Europe. Qualcomm may need to divest certain parts of Intel to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals. This bid could represent the largest acquisition attempt in the tech sector since Broadcom’s $142 billion bid for Qualcomm was blocked by the Trump administration in 2018 over national security concerns.
Qualcomm currently has a market value of $188 billion and approximately $13 billion in cash, but it remains uncertain how it would finance a bid for Intel, which is valued at around $122 billion, including its debt.
The logistics of integrating Intel’s extensive contract manufacturing capabilities pose additional challenges. Intel has invested significantly in its fabrication processes, employing tens of thousands of engineers to maintain its competitive edge in chip manufacturing, an area where Qualcomm has no prior experience.
As Intel works to turn its business around by focusing on AI processors and establishing a foundry for chip contract manufacturing, CEO Pat Gelsinger recently announced plans to restructure the company, including pausing construction on factories in Poland and Germany and reducing real estate holdings. Intel also confirmed a deal to produce a custom networking chip for Amazon’s AWS.
