OpenAI has announced the appointment of Leah Belsky as its inaugural General Manager of Education, underscoring its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into educational settings. Belsky, a former executive at Coursera, will focus on strengthening OpenAI’s relationships with the education sector, encompassing K-12, higher education, and continuing education.

In her new role, Belsky will oversee the implementation of OpenAI’s solutions in educational environments, collaborating with internal teams on products, policies, and marketing strategies. This cross-functional approach aims to build partnerships with universities and develop AI applications tailored for education.

The move follows the successful launch of ChatGPT Edu in May, a version of the popular AI tool designed specifically for educational institutions, featuring enhanced capabilities and pricing options. Since its introduction, ChatGPT has gained traction among students for its usefulness in coursework.

Belsky’s appointment comes as OpenAI strengthens its partnerships with academic institutions worldwide. Notable adopters of ChatGPT Edu include the University of Oxford, Arizona State University, and Columbia University. In October, OpenAI will convene a meeting with university presidents and provosts to discuss effective integration of AI in teaching and research, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting educators in leveraging AI best practices.

Belsky’s hiring aligns with other recent strategic appointments at OpenAI, including former political strategist Chris Lehane as Vice President of Global Policy. Lehane, known for his crisis management expertise during his time in the Clinton White House, will report to Anna Makanju, who has transitioned to Vice President of Global Impact after serving as Vice President of Global Affairs. Additionally, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently stepped down from the company’s internal Safety and Security Committee, formed in May to address key decision-making processes.
