A recent investigation by Hong Kong’s aviation accident authority has revealed that a significant engine failure aboard a Cathay Pacific Airbus A350 was caused by a ruptured fuel hose, which also exhibited signs of fire. The report, released on Thursday by Hong Kong’s Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA), highlights critical safety concerns for the airline and the broader aviation community.
The incident occurred during passenger flight CX383 on September 2, shortly after take-off, when the aircraft received an engine fire warning. The investigation determined that the failure was linked to a damaged fuel hose in the second engine, with five additional secondary fuel hoses also showing signs of wear and tear.
The AAIA’s findings indicate that the rupture, combined with the presence of oxygen and an ignition source, created a dangerous scenario where a fire could potentially spread to surrounding areas. The report cautioned that if not quickly detected and addressed, the situation could escalate into a more serious engine fire, resulting in extensive damage to the aircraft.
In response to this alarming discovery, Cathay Pacific has initiated comprehensive inspections of its entire fleet of Airbus A350 jets to ensure the safety of its operations. The airline noted that this was the first recorded instance of such a component failure on any A350 aircraft globally.
