The CEO of South Korean cryptocurrency deposit service Haru Invest was attacked in the neck by an assailant during his fraud trial at the Seoul Southern District Court on Wednesday, according to police. The CEO, identified only by his surname Lee, was injured but his condition is not life-threatening.
The attack was carried out by a man in his 50s who was present at the trial. Lee was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. The assailant has been apprehended and authorities are currently investigating his motives.
Lee faces fraud charges after Haru Invest halted withdrawals of approximately 1.4 trillion won (around $1.05 billion) worth of cryptocurrency that had been deposited by customers from March 2020 to June 2023.
Police continue to probe the incident, seeking to understand the assailant’s reasons for the attack.
