Nvidia Corp., the renowned graphics chip maker co-founded by billionaire CEO Jensen Huang, is facing scrutiny over its demanding work environment, despite offering its employees lucrative compensation packages. According to a Bloomberg report, current and former employees describe Nvidia as a high-pressure workplace where long hours and a toxic culture are prevalent.

Former employees, speaking anonymously, revealed that the work culture at Nvidia often involves grueling schedules. One ex-employee, who worked in technical support, reported working seven days a week with hours extending late into the night, sometimes as late as 1 am or 2 am. Another former employee, who left the company in 2022, highlighted the intensity of the work environment, describing it as a “pressure cooker” with frequent heated meetings and conflicts.

The term “golden handcuffs” is used by some ex-employees to describe the financial incentives that make it difficult to leave the company despite the demanding work conditions. Nvidia’s lucrative compensation packages, which include stock grants available after four years, are credited with keeping employee turnover significantly lower than the industry average. For the 2024 fiscal year, Nvidia reported a turnover rate of 2.7%, well below the semiconductor industry average of 17.7%.

CEO Jensen Huang, known for his hands-on and sometimes harsh management style, has publicly discussed his approach to leadership. Huang, who co-founded Nvidia in 1993 and now holds a net worth of $40.7 billion, has stated that he prefers to “torture” employees “into greatness” rather than resort to terminations. His management style involves demanding regular updates from employees and providing feedback through a centralized email system.

Despite these challenges, Nvidia’s workforce remains remarkably stable, with the company’s turnover rate showing a significant improvement from the previous year’s rate of 5.3%. Huang’s focus on long-term incentives and his belief in pushing employees to achieve their potential are seen as key factors in maintaining this low turnover.

While Nvidia continues to thrive in the competitive semiconductor industry, the intense work culture and high expectations set by Huang remain a point of contention among those who have experienced it firsthand.
