Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and owner of the social media platform X, voiced strong support on Monday for a California bill that mandates safety testing for AI models developed by tech companies. Musk emphasized that California should pass SB 1047, which proposes rigorous safety evaluations for certain AI technologies, reflecting his long-standing advocacy for AI regulation.

Musk’s support comes amidst a flurry of legislative activity in California, where state lawmakers introduced 65 bills related to AI this session. These proposals included measures aimed at ensuring fairness in algorithmic decisions and safeguarding the intellectual property of deceased individuals. However, many of these bills have already failed.

Microsoft, which backs OpenAI, also expressed support for another California bill, AB 3211. This bill would require tech companies to label AI-generated content, including everything from benign memes to potentially misleading deepfakes, to help combat misinformation, especially in light of upcoming elections in countries representing a significant portion of the global population.

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly influential, particularly in political contexts, the push for regulatory measures like SB 1047 and AB 3211 highlights ongoing concerns about AI’s impact on society and elections.
