The World Robot Conference in Beijing has spotlighted an increasingly competitive landscape in humanoid robotics. The conference, which began Wednesday, showcased a record 27 humanoid robots, emphasizing China’s rapid advancement in this field.

Among the highlights, Chinese companies demonstrated their humanlike robots performing a range of tasks, from playing the zither to serving drinks. In contrast, Tesla’s Optimus humanoid was presented in a more restrained manner—displayed inside a clear box, motionless beside Tesla vehicles.

Elon Musk has ambitious plans for Optimus, claiming that the robot could potentially handle tasks like folding laundry, cooking, cleaning, and even teaching children. Musk envisions these capabilities contributing significantly to Tesla’s valuation, projecting a value of $25 trillion for the company. Despite these lofty goals, the current performance of Optimus remains unclear, though Tesla plans to begin testing the robots in its factories next year.

China’s showcase at the conference highlighted a surge in investment and innovation in humanoid robotics. The country’s focus on developing humanlike robots reflects a trend similar to its previous push into electric vehicles. According to Wei Cao, a partner at Lanchi Ventures, the total investment in China’s robotics industry over the past decade has exceeded 100 billion yuan (approximately $14 billion). Cao anticipates that the next major advancement in humanoid robotics will be achieving a commercially viable application in manufacturing within the next one to two years. This involves creating robots capable of moving around and efficiently prioritizing a series of tasks.

The World Robot Conference also underscored the significant resources being funneled into the development of humanoid robots, highlighting China’s commitment to leading the industry. The conference’s record-breaking number of humanoid debuts reflects the rapid pace of innovation and the competitive nature of the global robotics market.

In summary, while Tesla’s Optimus aims to revolutionize automation with advanced functionalities, the vibrant display of humanoid robots at the Beijing conference reveals a robust and rapidly evolving competition in the field. The next few years will likely be crucial in determining which companies and technologies will lead the charge in humanoid robotics.
