Apple to Revise Browser Options and App Deletion Policies in Response to EU Digital Markets Act

Apple Inc. has announced a significant update to its software practices in the European Union (EU) as part of its compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which took effect on March 7. The changes, set to roll out later this year, will include a revamped browser selection process, the introduction of a dedicated section for managing default apps, and increased flexibility for users to delete certain pre-installed Apple apps.

Under the new regulations, Apple will modify how users select their default web browsers. The company will introduce a “choice screen” that users will encounter the first time they open Safari. This screen will present a randomized list of 12 web browsers specific to each EU country, complete with brief descriptions of each option. Once a user selects their preferred browser, it will be automatically downloaded and set as the default. This choice screen will be available not only on iPhones but also on iPads through an upcoming update.

This adjustment comes after Apple’s previous update, which faced criticism from browser companies and regulatory scrutiny. The European Commission had opened an investigation on March 25, expressing concerns that Apple’s initial implementation might not fully comply with the DMA’s requirements. Andrew Frost Moroz, founder of the Aloha browser, welcomed the new choice screen, highlighting that it would improve user experience by reducing the number of steps needed to start browsing and provide better visibility for third-party browsers.

In addition to updating browser options, Apple will introduce a dedicated section in the settings where users can manage their default applications. This section will allow users to set default preferences for various functions, including messaging, phone calls, spam filters, password managers, and keyboards. This enhancement aims to provide greater flexibility and customization for users’ preferences.

Furthermore, Apple will expand the range of apps that users can delete from their devices. Users will now have the option to remove several Apple-made apps, including the App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari. The only exceptions will be the Settings and Phone apps, which will remain undeletable to ensure core functionality of the devices. This move is intended to address concerns over user control and app management, giving individuals more freedom over the applications installed on their devices.

Apple has been in ongoing discussions with the European Commission and is confident that these updates will meet the regulatory demands of the DMA. The Commission has stated that it will closely monitor the effectiveness of these changes to ensure they achieve the intended objectives of the DMA. Depending on the results, the Commission will determine the next steps in the ongoing case.

Overall, these updates represent Apple’s efforts to align with EU regulations while enhancing user choice and control over their digital experience.
