Apple is making significant strides in its quest to revolutionize smart home technology with the development of a groundbreaking table-top robotic device, according to a recent Bloomberg report. Codenamed J595, this innovative gadget is set to combine an iPad-like screen with a robotic limb capable of moving and repositioning the display. Expected to function as both a smart home command center and a video conferencing tool, the device aims to enhance user interaction through advanced AI capabilities.
The project, which received internal approval in 2022, is now progressing rapidly, with a projected launch date of either 2026 or 2027. Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of technology who previously led the company’s self-driving car initiative, is spearheading the development of this new device. The table-top robot will likely feature actuators that allow the display to tilt and rotate 360 degrees, offering a dynamic user experience.
Early development stages indicate that the device will run on a customized version of iPadOS and be controlled by an upgraded version of Siri, incorporating Apple Intelligence features. Users will be able to issue voice commands, such as “Look at Me,” to prompt the device to turn its display towards them, making interactions more intuitive.
In addition to this ambitious project, Apple is also exploring other smart home innovations. The company is reportedly working on robotic devices designed to navigate users’ homes autonomously and has discussed developing a humanoid version of the smart robot. Led by robotics expert Hanns Wolfram Tappeiner, this initiative involves over 100 engineers who previously worked on the Apple Car project.
Beyond these developments, Apple is also delving into augmented reality (AR) glasses and a new version of AirPods that may include built-in cameras and AI to enhance user experience based on their surroundings.
