Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest automaker, has officially started exporting its Fronx sports utility vehicle (SUV) to Japan. The first shipment of over 1,600 Fronx vehicles departed from Gujarat’s Pipavav port, marking a significant milestone for the company. This move makes the Fronx the first SUV from Maruti Suzuki to enter the Japanese market.
The Fronx will be the second Maruti Suzuki model to be exported to Japan, following the Baleno, which was introduced there in 2016. The SUV is produced exclusively at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, underscoring the company’s commitment to showcasing Indian automotive manufacturing on a global stage.
Suzuki Motor Corporation, which holds a 58% stake in Maruti Suzuki, plans to launch the Fronx in Japan later this year. “Japan is known for its rigorous standards and advanced automotive market. Our export of the Fronx to Japan demonstrates Maruti Suzuki’s ability to produce world-class vehicles that meet the highest standards of technology, performance, safety, and quality,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India.
The Fronx, which made its global debut at the Auto Expo 2023 and was launched in India on April 24, 2023, has quickly gained traction. It achieved the fastest 1 lakh sales within 10 months of its launch in India. Since then, the SUV has been exported to various markets, including Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. To date, Fronx has recorded total sales of over 2 lakh units across domestic and international markets.
In the past fiscal year, Maruti Suzuki led passenger vehicle exports with over 2.8 lakh units shipped to over 100 countries, capturing a 42% share of the country’s passenger vehicle exports. The company has also set a record for the highest ever export of 70,560 units in a single quarter (April-June) of the current fiscal year.
The introduction of the Fronx to Japan not only highlights Maruti Suzuki’s growing international presence but also reinforces India’s position as a key player in the global automotive industry.
