The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated an investigation into Amazon’s partnership with the AI startup Anthropic, just days after launching a similar probe into Alphabet’s collaboration with the company. The CMA’s review will determine if the partnership raises any competition concerns.
The CMA has until October 4 to decide whether to refer the Amazon-Anthropic deal for a more in-depth investigation or to clear it of any competition issues.
In response, an Amazon spokesperson stated, “Amazon’s collaboration with Anthropic does not raise any competition concerns or meet the CMA’s threshold for review.” The spokesperson emphasized that Amazon does not have a board seat or decision-making authority at Anthropic, and that Anthropic remains free to collaborate with other companies.
Anthropic’s spokesperson echoed this sentiment, noting that their strategic partnerships and investment relationships do not affect their independence or ability to work with other partners. “We intend to cooperate with the CMA and provide a comprehensive understanding of our collaboration with Amazon,” the spokesperson said.
This investigation comes on the heels of a similar probe by the CMA into Alphabet’s partnership with Anthropic. Antitrust regulators globally have been increasingly scrutinizing deals between major tech firms and smaller startups to ensure fair competition. In July, regulators from the United States, European Union, and the UK issued a joint statement to bolster collaborative efforts in maintaining fair competition within the tech industry.
