Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charitable arm of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has announced a landmark donation of $600 million to the endowments of four historically Black medical schools. This generous contribution is set to significantly bolster the financial stability and future of these institutions.

The donation, disclosed at the National Medical Association’s annual convention in New York, will see Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine each receive $175 million. Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science will benefit from $75 million, while Xavier University of Louisiana’s new medical school will receive a $5 million grant.

“This substantial gift aims to empower new generations of Black doctors and foster a more equitable and healthier future for the nation,” Bloomberg said in a statement.

This donation comes as part of Bloomberg’s ongoing efforts to address healthcare disparities. A recent Associated Press series highlighted that Black Americans experience poorer health outcomes compared to white Americans, with only 6% of U.S. physicians being Black, despite Black Americans comprising 13% of the population.

The new funding will more than double the endowments of three of the recipient schools. It follows a previous $1 billion pledge made by Bloomberg in July to Johns Hopkins University, which will eliminate tuition for most medical students there.

The historically Black medical schools are currently deciding how to allocate the funds from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Garnesha Ezediaro, who leads the Greenwood Initiative at Bloomberg Philanthropies, noted that this initiative was initially part of Bloomberg’s presidential campaign and has since evolved to focus on reducing the racial wealth gap.

In 2020, Bloomberg Philanthropies had already donated $100 million to these same medical schools to alleviate student debt exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This latest gift will further support these institutions’ efforts to increase their endowments and support their students.

Valerie Montgomery Rice, president of Morehouse School of Medicine, remarked on the impact of the previous donation, which helped reduce average student debt by $100,000. She expressed optimism that the new funds would address ongoing challenges related to endowment size and fundraising.

Recent significant donations to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have included a $100 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to The United Negro College Fund and a similar amount donated to Spelman College by Ronda Stryker and William Johnston. These contributions are part of a broader trend of philanthropic support aimed at addressing financial disparities faced by HBCUs.

Denise Smith of The Century Foundation emphasized the crucial role of such donations in supporting HBCUs amidst systemic financial inequities. The momentum from these gifts is vital for sustaining these institutions and their pivotal role in advancing education and equity.

Dr. Yolanda Lawson, president of the National Medical Association, expressed relief and optimism about the impact of Bloomberg’s gift, particularly in light of recent Supreme Court decisions and challenges to affirmative action. She highlighted that this investment will have far-reaching effects on national health by increasing the number of Black physicians.

Utibe Essien, a physician and researcher at UCLA, noted that investment in earlier educational support and efforts to counteract racial disparities are essential for sustaining diversity in the medical field. He also cautioned that recent societal backlash could negatively impact the pursuit of careers in medicine among diverse students.

Overall, Bloomberg’s $600 million donation marks a transformative moment for these historically Black medical schools, reinforcing their role in shaping the future of healthcare and addressing critical disparities in medical representation and outcomes.
