Tata Group has initiated the construction of a significant semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Assam, marking a major step in India’s push towards self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing. The groundbreaking ceremony for the ₹27,000-crore plant took place in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, and was attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran.
Scheduled to commence operations by 2025, the new facility will have the capacity to produce 4.83 crore semiconductor chips daily. Union Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of the plant, noting that it will utilize indigenously-developed technologies. “The facility will deploy three major technologies developed in India, underscoring our commitment to self-reliance in the semiconductor sector,” Vaishnaw stated.
The chips manufactured at this facility will support various critical sectors, including electric vehicles, communication, and network infrastructure. Vaishnaw also highlighted the potential for significant job creation, predicting extensive employment opportunities as the semiconductor ecosystem grows around the new plant.
Tata Group’s N Chandrasekaran announced that the facility will generate approximately 27,000 jobs, with 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect positions. “We aim to accelerate the construction of the plant and begin operations as swiftly as possible, targeting 2025 for its completion,” Chandrasekaran added.
Approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2024, this project is part of the India Semiconductor Mission, which focuses on developing talent and infrastructure for the semiconductor industry. The initiative includes collaboration with nine institutions in the northeast, such as NITs and North Eastern Hill University, to support talent development in this sector.
Assam Chief Minister Sarma hailed the event as a transformative moment for the state, promising full support for the project and emphasizing its positive impact on Assam’s industrial and employment landscape.
In addition to the Assam facility, Tata Electronics is also establishing India’s first wafer fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat, with a ₹91,000 crore investment. This unit is expected to produce 50,000 wafers per month by December 2026.
