Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer Li Auto achieved a record-breaking number of deliveries in July, driven by strong sales of its new, more affordable Li L6 SUV. The company announced on Thursday that it delivered 51,000 vehicles last month, marking its highest monthly total ever and surpassing the 50,000-unit milestone for the first time since December.

The Li L6, launched in April, has been a key factor in this success, with over 20,000 units delivered monthly. Priced at 249,000 yuan ($34,373), the Li L6 is the company’s most budget-friendly model and is designed with both a battery and a fuel tank to extend its driving range—a feature that resonates with Chinese consumers who remain cautious about relying solely on battery power.

This record performance contrasts with a trend observed among other battery-only automakers, who have reported lower monthly deliveries compared to hybrid-powered vehicle manufacturers. The strong preference for hybrid models underscores ongoing consumer concerns about the practicality and range of pure electric vehicles in China.

Li Auto’s success with the Li L6 reflects a broader shift in consumer preference towards hybrid options, as well as the company’s ability to cater to market demands with its innovative approach. The Li L6’s success also positions it competitively against other popular models like Tesla’s Model Y, which is similarly priced but exclusively battery-powered.

Tesla, which does not break out delivery figures by country, reported total sales of 59,261 vehicles in China for June, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
