In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable air mobility, Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) has announced plans to purchase 100 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from the German aerospace company Lilium. The initiative aims to introduce flying taxis to transport Haj and Umrah pilgrims between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and hotels in Makkah, revolutionizing the traditional modes of transportation during the holy pilgrimage seasons.

Saudia’s investment in sustainable air mobility makes it one of the first airlines in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to embrace this futuristic mode of transport. The all-electric Lilium Jets, equipped with cutting-edge eVTOL technology, are set to redefine the travel experience for pilgrims, providing a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative.

Abdullah Al Shahrani, director of corporate communications and spokesman of the Saudia Group, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that air taxis would be utilized as a new mode of transportation during the Haj season. The Lilium Jets are designed to accommodate four to six passengers, offering a swift and comfortable journey covering a maximum distance of 250 km. The unique cabin design provides flexibility in seat arrangements, enhancing the overall travel experience.

The Saudia Group’s commitment to sustainable air mobility is reflected in its contract to purchase 100 Lilium Jets. These flying taxis will operate between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and designated airstrips near Makkah hotels, particularly those situated close to the Grand Mosque and other holy places. This strategic deployment aims to streamline transportation for pilgrims, reducing travel time and enhancing convenience.

One of the standout features of the Lilium Jet is its zero operating emissions, aligning seamlessly with Saudi Arabia’s broader goals of promoting sustainable practices. By opting for an all-electric fleet, Saudia contributes to the country’s sustainable air mobility development strategy, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.

The introduction of flying taxis is poised to bring about a paradigm shift in the way pilgrims travel during the sacred Haj and Umrah seasons. Beyond the immediate benefits of reduced travel time, the Lilium Jets symbolize Saudia’s dedication to embracing cutting-edge technologies that prioritize environmental sustainability.

As Saudi Arabia takes a bold step into the future of air travel, the collaboration with Lilium showcases the potential for transformative innovation in the aviation industry. Saudia’s adoption of flying taxis not only modernizes pilgrimage transportation but also sets a precedent for other airlines to explore sustainable alternatives, ushering in a new era of eco-friendly and efficient air mobility.
