UN Plans Blockchain Academy to Train 22,000 Staff on Web3 Technologies

In response to the emerging regulatory landscape governing Web3 technologies worldwide, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is gearing up to launch a blockchain academy in 2024. The initiative aims to assist countries in achieving sustainable development goals by educating its staff members on blockchain and Web3 technologies. Partnering with the Algorand Foundation, the UNDP plans to train over 22,000 staff members across 170 nations.

The UNDP, focused on aiding poverty-stricken regions with robust policies, skills, partnerships, and institutions, envisions training its staff to leverage blockchain for refining digital identity applications, real-world asset tokenization, enhancing supply chain transparency, and promoting financial inclusion.

Announcing the partnership at the Algorand Impact Summit in New Delhi on November 30, Robert Pasicko, UNDP’s expert for alternative finance and low carbon development, highlighted the significance of the Algorand Blockchain Academy in equipping the team with tools to address global challenges using blockchain technology.

The program, set to launch in 2024, will deliver recorded lectures, interactive workshops, and hands-on assignments on blockchain and Web3 technologies to UNDP staff. The initiative will enter beta mode between January and March 2024, gradually expanding its reach.

Doro Unger-Lee, Head of Education and Inclusion at Algorand Foundation, emphasized the initiative as a critical first step toward identifying and implementing actionable use cases of blockchain to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

The UNDP’s move aligns with the increasing global readiness to embrace Web3 technologies within a regulatory framework. In Europe, the MiCA framework, approved in October, focuses on consumer protection and preventing market manipulation and financial crimes in the crypto sector. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have also introduced their crypto laws, and G20 members are implementing the crypto roadmap finalized under India’s presidency.

These regulatory efforts aim to create a safe environment for individuals to explore and engage with the Web3 sector, which is anticipated to generate thousands of jobs worldwide as the industry continues to expand.
