TerraPower, a nuclear venture founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, said on the 16th that it chose Kenmerer, Wyoming, as the site for the first sodium-cooled next-generation nuclear reactor. Announced.

If permission is granted, a nuclear reactor with a power generation capacity of 345 MW is scheduled to start operation in 2028, which is a schedule set by the parliament.

The total construction cost is 4 billion dollars, and the US federal government will contribute about half of it, about 1.9 billion dollars. Of this amount, $ 1.5 billion will come from the budget of the Biden administration’s flagship policy, the Infrastructure Investment Law, which was passed this week.

The Secretary of Energy, Granholm, said the selection of Kenmeller as the site of construction, where the coal-fired power plant will be closed in 2025, gives hope to the city.

TerraPower is working on a project in partnership with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
