Google, on Thursday, announced the opening of its first-ever retail store in New York City, United States. According to the tech giant, the store has been equipped with environmentally sustainable materials, furniture, and fixtures. The store will primarily feature Google’s hardware products that includes Pixel phones, Fitbits, Nest smarthome gadgets, and other products. The Google store is designed more like a showroom than a retail store.
The first permanent Google retail store opened its doors to customers on Thursday, June 17, 2021, which is located near its offices in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. With the physical retail store, Google aims to provide customers an immersive and direct introduction to its products and will use this as an opportunity to obtain immediate customer feedback. The store is wide and spans nearly the entirety of W 15th to 16th Street but also has a narrow design. It has tall floor-to-ceiling windows with Discovery Boxes, with three boxes to each window bay, having different themes such as hardware sustainability. The company has also highlighted the fact that the store has a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum rating, which is the highest ranking in green building, and is one of 217 retail spaces having this rating. At the primary entrance, a 17-foot tall glass structure deemed as “Google Imagination Space” will have customized interactive screens enabling customers to have a remarkable experience of the products and technology. When customers talk, they will get a first-hand experience of real-time speech translation into over 24 languages at the same time. Customers will also be able to understand the functioning of YouTube, Google Search, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Stadia, among others.
Apart from Google products, the store will also have third-party accessories such as phone cases and other peripherals and branded merchandise such as T-shirts, hats, and basketballs for sale. There are no checkout counters in the retail store and the associates will have a fully-functional device that can efficiently process transaction. Google has worked to integrate the online and physical store shopping experiences to streamline the checkout process.
The Here to Help support desk in the store will help customers get their products repaired, in terms of software and hardware. Google said the entire store will offer users a hands-on interaction with its wide-range of products and services wherein the customers can get an expert team of Google Store to answer questions, assist with specific issues, and on-the-spot troubleshooting of issues.
